Storms Again Damage East Coast
[Special to n Northern Advocate CJ GISBORNE, This Day.
As the result of the recent storms, further extensive damage has resulted in the Cape Runaway district, where settlers have experienced a particularly difficult winter. In one flood a pile-driving derrick was carried half a mile downstream, notwithstanding the fact that it was anchored to a pile which had been driven 10ft into the ground.
An indication of the rainfall for the locality is given by the returns from Matarau, between Cape Runaway and Hicks’ Bay, where 17.34 inches was registered in 17 days. At Cape Runaway itself, there was 12.54 inches in 14 days, three inches falling on one occasion in four hours.
