Fig Breeds Restriction: Comments Resented
1 Per Press Association. Copyright .] PALMERSTON NORTH, This Day.
Maintaining that its responsibility was to give equal recognition to all breeds, the New Zealand Pig Breeders’ Council lias decided to lodge a protest against the comment published by the Superintendent of the Pig Industry in the July issue of the “Journal of Agriculture," wherein he advocated the elimination of some of the existing breeds. The matter was introduced when the Northland branch of the Now Zealand Pig Breeders’ Association forwarded a resolution drawing attention of the parent body to the remarks published. The writer added that it was felt that there was a movement afoot to limit the number of breeds of pigs in the Dominion, the inference being that eventually one breed only would be retained. The branch expressed the opinion that no Government servant should Issue remarks derogatory to anyone breed, unless able to give proof of the unsuitability of that breed' to fulfill requirements for which it had been raised.
The chairman, Mr. G. S. Ross (Bay of Plenty), said it was the policy of the council to treat all breeds alike. The comment mentioned should not have appeared in the “Journal of Agriculture,” and the subject would have been better left alone.
