Big Attack On Hankow
(Received 2.30 p.m.) SHANGHAI, August 28. Following the Japanese attack on a civil passenger plane on Wednesday, the German-Chinese owned air line has suspended service Horn Hongkong to Hankow. The China National Company has already ceased its service. Continuous bombing severed the railway, resulting in Hankow being temporarily isolated. Chinese believe Hankow will hold out for six months, but foreign observers believe it will fall before the middle of November.
The Japanese estimate that 800,000 Chinese are holding Hankow’s double line of defence, but lack artillery to deal with Japanese naval guns from the Yangtse. Japanese are mustering for a fullstrength attack on Hankow to avoid a winter campaign, but are hampered by heat, sickness and difficult condi tions.
