Sussex Start Well Against Australia

Cricket

(Received 10 a.m.) LONDON. August 27. Fine stands by Hassett and Brown were features of the cricket match between Sussex and Australia. Australia, which batted first, made 336 and the county replied with 43 for no wickets. The teams were: — Australia: McCabe, Brown, Badcock, Barnes, Hassett, McCormick, Barnett, Waite, Walker, Ward, White. Sussex: Holmes, Staintor?, John Langridge, Parks, James Langridge, Bartlett, Cox, Hammond, W. Cornford, Wood, J. Cornford.

Australia won the toss. The weather was calm and sunny. The Australians started quietly, Walker being at the crease for 35 minutes. Badcock failed to get over a ball from the medium left-hander, Wood, and was caught in the gulley.

Hassett and Brown Bat Well Hassett, who found the wicket to his liking, drove and pulled stylishly. McCabe fell cheaply. He has often fallen lately through apparent carelessness or staleness. The morning’s play was languorous. Hassett and Brown continued batting .after lunch, and then, after a stay of 115 minutes at the wicket, Hassett touched a ball from Hammond and it trickled on to his off stump and just dislodged the bail. Brown continued batting soundly, but spent half an hour getting four runs for his 50, which he completed in two hours. It was a model innings as regards stroke production. Waite was not altogether comfortable, but played occasional good strokes. Brown score ipore briskly after tea till an excellent delivery from Wood took the top of his off stump. He batted for 160 minutes and his score included two fours. ‘ ‘ i if I

McCormick Treated Lightly Stainton and John Langridge scored quickly for Sussex, and played out time in spite of the fact that four bowlers were tried. They were especially confident against McCormick. Scores: —
