Kensington Juniors Improve

The greatly-improved game played by Kensington was the outstanding feature of the junior knock-out match between Kensington and Portland, played at Jubilee Park prior to the main game. Under the conditions, both teams staged a good, hard display, Portland running out the winners, 9 —3. Early in the game, Massey scored two tries in succession for the winners, 'both being under the posts. Play then fairly even until late in thq. first spell, when Portland made several attempts to score again, but failed to finish-off their movements.

With the wind behind them, Kensington went into the attack in the opening stages of the second half, and Ifrom a scramble on the Portland lino, Conaghan scored.

Portland again came to the forefront, dominating in the scrums, while Bland, McLean, and Mee were going well in the backs. Broughton, Kensington’s wing, was right in the thick Of it and turned on some excellent

defensive work, with solid assistance from the full-back, Dickie. Kensington had one chance, but the ball went dead. In the closing stages of the game McLean scored for Portland, to put the issue beyond doubt.

The Secretary of State for the Dominions, Lord Stanley, addressing Canadian ex-servicemen, said: “There is an idea in some quarters that the youth of England has become flabby and degenerate. Don’t believe it; they are every bit as good as when we wore young. Jf at any time a threat comes, if the youth of England are called upon, I have no doubt about the wholehearted response they will give.”
