Australian Miners Accept Tribunal

rHeceived 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, August 18. The Central Council of the Australian Miners’ Federation to-day informed the Premier, Mr B. S. Stevens, of its official acceptance of the proposed mine safety and health tribunal. consisting of a Judge of the Supreme Court and one representative each of the employers and the miners. The offer to set up a tribunal to investigate the conditions in the mines was made by Mr Stevens on August 7. It was stated on Tuesday that its acceptance would avert, at any rate for the present, the danger of a general strike in the industry.

Eight of the 13 collieries in the Cessnock field were idle to-day for various ' reasons, chiefly strikes. The management of one colliery sounded the “no work” whistle, because of the miners’ restriction of output during the strike negotiations.

At the compulsory conference at Newcastle the terms of a settlement of the dispute at the North Wallarah group of collieries was reached. It is expected that the miners will endorse them at a meeting of the lodge concerned today.
