N.Z. Press Defended

WELLINGTON, This Day,

“I want to challenge the statement that the Press of New Zealand has entered into any agreement or made any 1 bargain with members of this House to carry on a dirty election campaign," declared Mr R. A. Wright (Independent—Wellington Suburbs), when speaking in the financial debate in the House of Representatives yesterday. “I don’t believe it for a moment,” he added.

“The Press of New Zealand whether we agree with them or not is immaterial at the moment —has a good name, not only in New Zealand, but outside New Zealand,” Mr Wright continued. “They are regarded generally as being fair and just. They may be hard in their ciriticism, perhaps they are too hard at times, but it cannot be denied that they are at least fair, and if they attack a man, whether he be a public man or not, they invariably give him an opportunity of replying. I have never known of a case where they have denied that opportunity. Their leading articles may be severe, but I can’t see anything in any of them to which exception can

be taken, and as for creating a dirty campaign, I don’t believe it.”
