War Talk in Germany; Uneasiness Growing; Significant Actions

(Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, August 10,

MAN IN THE STREET IN GERMANY IS INCREASINGLY NERVOUS, SAYS THE BERLIN CORRESPONDENT OF THE “DAILY MAIL.” AT PRESENT THERE IS MORE TALK OF WAR IN MAY, WHEN THE TENSION APPEARED TO BE AT ITS GREATEST TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD. The calling up of reservists for training in the autumn is intensifying the feeling of uncertainty. Germans are beginning to inquire the purpose of the press attacks on Czechoslovakia, if it is not proposed to follow them up with action.

Further Evidence. Further evidence of the extraordinary efforts that are being made to complete the ring of fortification on Germany’s western frontier is provided in an appeal to private lorry owners to put all trucks carrying more than two tons at the disposal of the State until the end of October, says the Berlin correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph.” Generous pay is promised. The lorries will be drafted to the Rhineland to facilitate the work of strengthening the fortifications. Depression Indications.

The Berlin correspondent of “The Times” reports that apprehension is spreading in Germany. Prices on the Berlin Stock Exchange declined today on an average five points, one of the sharpest falls since the Nazis seized power. Company reports indicate the presence of all the classical accompaniments to the onslaught of a depression and complain that owing to rising costs the expansion of profits has not kept pace with the expansion of sales. Wages, however, have been .kept low, unlike the cost of capital, and the continuance of low wages may yet delay the break in German industrial activity.
