ISpeciai to “Northern Advocate.”} WELLINGTON, This Day..Reporting On the accounts of the State mines during 1937, the Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb, states that the increase in the individual earnings of workers has been over 70 per cent, within three years. - - The net profit of the mines for the year ended March 31, 1938, was £13,168. £10,928 was written off for depreciation, making the total depreciation written off £551,117, representing 7.36 per cent, or tne gross capital expenditure. The total net profit from inception to March 31, 1938, was £220,108.

“The total wages paid for coalwinning at both collieries during the , year amounted to the sum of £109,098,” he said. “These wages were distributed amongst 377 men and 26 youths, and represent an average income per employee of £271. For the previous year the average income per employee was £239, the total sum paid in wages for coal-winning being £93,828, and the number of employees being 367 men and-27 youths. •

“In the financial year 1934-35, immediately prior to the commencement of the present Government’s term of office, the total wages paid amounted to £63,353.
