Britain’s Employment Statistics
RUGBY, August 8. The Minister of Labour estimates that at July 18 the number of insured persons in employment in Britain, exclusive of persons within the agricultural scheme, was approximately 11,371,000, which is 38,000 more than In the previous month, but. on a comparable basis, about 300,900 less than ,a year ago.
At the. same date, registered unemployed, including persons within the agricultural scheme, numbered 1.773,116, comprising 1,244,461 wholly unemployed, 46,773 temporarily laid off, and 60,882 normally in casual employment. This was 29,796 less than at June 13, but, on a comparable basis. 448,000 more than at July 26, 1937. The total includes 1,322,129 men, 46,629 boys, 356,982 women and 47,376 girls. Of the total 1,103,000, or 63 per cent had been unemployed for less than three months.
