(Received 11.30 a.m.) PRAGUE, August 9. Viscount Runciman is authoritatively reported to be optimistic regarding the possibility of a favourable settlement of the Czech problem. Officials in contact with Lord Runciman say he is impressed by the serious desire of all parties for a peaceful settlement. It is understood he received assurances that the Government and the Sudeten party will compromise to a greater extent provided Britain will sponsor the eventual agreement. Lord Runciman has issued his first official announcement, stating that he had a conference with Dr. Hodza, ■ Czech Prime Minister, regarding the next step for further elucidation and co-operation with the Czechs. Later, he received a Sudeten delegation, and further discussed a memorandum.
