Australian Aircraft Strike Ends

(Received noon.) MELBOURNE, August 9. The strike of engineers at the Commonwealth Aircraft Co-operation works at Fishermen’s Bend threatens to extend to the munition works at Footscray and Maribyrnong, and also to the defence factory in New South Wales, the workers at which will be asked to make common cause with the strikers. A meeting of shop stewards at the Victorian munition works will be held tomorrow night and will discuss this aspect. Mr. J. Cranwell, chairman of the Amalgamated Engineering Union, explained that the new award for aircraft work, which caused the dispute, was “infamous,” providing for unlimited junior process workers and apprentices, and allowing the employers to contract with any employee to' train him on skilled work at not less than 40 per cent, of his margin over the classification rates. Mr. Cranwell claimed that all engineers would eventually suffer through this award-, hence the need for a common cause.
