New Zealanders Win First Match

'Received 8.30 a.m.) SYDNEY. August 8. The New Zealand basketball loam played its first match against a New South Wales second team this morning, winning by .19 points to 15. and departed for Melbourne this afternoon. The New Zealanders were obviously at a disadvantage, having just left the Wanganella. and also they were not familiar with the interpretation of the Australian rules, which differ in some respects from the New Zealand rules. The game also was played on grass. The New Zealanders took a little time to warm up. but led by 6 goals to 3 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the home team drew ahead, and the score at half-time was B—78—7 in favour of New South Wales.
In the third and fourth quarters, the New Zealand team were, definitely superior, and added 12 points to New South Wales' 8. The visitors’ positional play was better than that of their opponents, and they were also nippier. The New Zealand team against New South Wales was as follows: —E. Howard, M. Tangye, J. Willson. M. Howe. M. Matangi, E. Sinclair. J. Mitchell. Miss Matangi played a splendid game, and Miss Tangye also was excellent.
