Link With Earliest Waipu Broken

An interesting link with the early settlement of Northland has been severed with the passing of Mrs Annabell Nfcholson, who died at Waihi at the age of 84. Mrs Nicholson’s parents, the late Mr and Mrs William “Beck” McKenzie, were among the Nova Scotians who came to t New Zealand in 1853, and settled at Waipu, and she was the first European born in Waipu. Living in the Scottish community, her earlier years were surrounded by purely Gaelic influences and she did not hear a word of the English language until she was almost 20 years of age. More than 55 years ago she was married to the late Mr James Nicholson, and for a period made her home at Okaihau and later at Whangape. She had been a resident of Waihi for 41 years, her husband predeceasing her several years ago. She is survived by a family of four daughters—Mrs A. Powell, Hauraki Plains, Mrs Hollis, Waihi. Mrs Seeley. Wellington, and Mrs R. Green. Okaihau —and one son. Mr Angus Nicholson, of Taranaki. Another son lost his life during the war. Mr Donald W. McKenzie, of Waipu, is a brother, while Mr S. C. Crawford, of Whangaroi. is n nephew of the deceased lady.
