Relief Worker Fined
Charged with obtaining benefits to which he was not entitled under the pro visions nl the Employment Promotion Act. by making false declarations (j 1 private earnings, a Paparoa relie 1’ wcrkei, S. R. Johnson, was fined .1125 in the Magistrate's Court at. Maung'aturolo yesterday. Defendant did not appear. Mr A. E. Foster, district employment officer for ‘the Labour Department, Whangarei. staled in evidence that during the period covered 'by the charge, defendant had been on relief, working his allocation for the Otamatea County Council. In the usual declarations. Johnson declared his earnings. apart from relief, as being nil on 11 occasions, and was accordingly granted a full relief allowance. These statements wore _ incorrect, as defendant had been a supplier to the Maungaturoto Dairy Company, and each month had received a cheque, the amount of which should have been declared. As a result, he had obtained £19'17 ' - to which he was not entitled. The magistrate. Mr G. N. Morris, entered a conviction, and inflicted a fine of £25. with Court costs 10/-.
