N.A. Bowling Centre’s Good Year

A good deal of heavy, but unrocurring, expenditure characterised last season’s activities of the North Auckland Bowling Centre, the annual meeting of which was held at Whangarei last night. Under the circumstances, the centre was considered fortunate to have emerged with a small credit balance. From all other aspects, the season most most successful. The following delegates wove present: —Messrs. S. Blanshard (Maungaturoto). J. M. Stark. M. Edgar (Hikurangi), A. C. Whitham (Portland). C. Smeeting, J. W. Hoskin (Kaitaia), B. R. Miller, J. H. Marwick (Whangarei), C. V. Stringer, A. Curtis (Kensington), J. Spiers (Russell), and T. H. Steadman (Hokianga). In the absence of the president. Mr G. H. Wansbone, Mr B. R. Miller (vicepresident) occupied the chair. A letter was received from the newly-formed Ruawal club, thanking j the centre for its friendly interest, and i apologising for not being represented at the meeting. President’s Report.

In his review of the year, the president congratulated the centre on a most successful season, not only from a financial point of view, but also on the playing and social side of the game. The credit balance was most satisfactory, considering the expense involved in entertaining visitors during the year. The event of the season was the visit from the South Auckland centre. There were in the party 45 bowlers and a number of ladies, the total being 75. Very satisfactory entertainment was arranged for the visitors, who all left with a good opinion of the district. The president extended thanks to those members of the executive who gave their time willingly to make the lour a success.

The president congratulated the Kawakawa club for coming into the game once more. The annual tournament was again a success, being won by the Dargaville team. The champion j of champions was won for the second year in succession by Mr Buchan, of Kaikohe, who unfortunately for bowling in the North, had been transferred to Auckland. “This season only three games were played for the centre’s trophies,” continued the president. “These trophies were presented with the object of encouraging interclub play, and I would ask all clubs to give more attention to this matter next year,” Mr. Wansbone, who explained that he had been unable to give full justice to his duties on account of ill-health, extended thanks to Mr. Miller for the way yi which he .had deputised, and ' to Mr O. Williams, Dargaville dele- i gate, who had given much willing assistance. He also thanked the secretary, Mr. E. B. Moore, and the treasurer, Mr. W. C. Coote, and members of the executive for the support during the i year and the careful manner in which they had considered all matters coming before them. Secretary Reviews Year, “Not having received returns from several clubs I cannot give the position regarding the number of members in . the centre this season,” said the secretary, Mr. Moore, in his annual report. , “On the figures so far returned six clubs have increased their membership and five have decreased, showing an aggregate decrease of 17 on last year's figures. “Correspondence for the season has beer! exceptionally heavy, mainly owing to the visit of the South Auckland bowlers, about 100 inward and 120 outward letters and telegrams being handled. In addition a large number of circulars, notices and cards were dispatched and 97 posters were sent out for the annual tourney." The secretary expressed appreciation of the assistance rendered from all quarters in connection with the South Auckland bowlers’ visit especially by Messrs Miller and Coote. Proposed Return Visit. “It is proposed to pay a return visit to South Auckland during the coming season.” the report continued. "I would suggest that unless at least 32 members could make the trip the tour be abandoned. Owing to the expense and trouble incurred by the clubs visited it would not be fair to them to take only a small party. Financial Position. The balance sheet showed that the year which commenced with a credit of £26/18/3 closed with a credit of £2/15/-, a considerable expense having been Incurred in the entertainment of the visiting South Auckland bowlers, j Details of the receipts were;— Af- j filiation fees: Maungaturoto. £1 17/6; Portland. £2 2-; Kensington. £5 3/6; Walpu, £2 14-; Kaitala. £5 13/6; Hlkurangi. £2 17-: Whangaroi. £8 3/6; Paparoa, £1 7/6; Dargaville. £6 12-; Russell, 12/-; Kaikohe, £2 11/6; Rawene, £1 IG/6; Kawakawa 10/6; Total of £42/1/-. Donations towards entertainment of visiting players amounted to £2/12/6, making a grand total of £9? 11/9. Among the payments, tournament ! expenses amounted to £22/7/7, and 1 expenses of the South Auckland visit, £32/7/8, including an allowance of £8 15/- to the Dargaville club.
