The death occurred yesterday of an old resident of Remuera, Mr William Finlay, of Ridings Road, in his 87th year. Mr Finlay was born in Canada and arrived in New Zealand with his parents in 1868. Later Mr Finlay joined his father on a successful gold claim at Thames, and when this ceased to be profitable he worked in kauri forests at Whangaroa and Dargaville. He is survived by Mrs Finlay and by two sons and two daughters. The New Zealand High Commissioner, Mr W. J. Jordan, presented the former New Zealand Olympic Games representative and present holder of the world’s 1500 metre record, J. E. Lovelock, who is house physician at St. Mary’s Hospital, London, with a gold wristlet watch, a platinum and gold chain, pearl studs and medical instruments, gifts from New Zealand athletes.
