Burden On Industry
[Per Press Association. —copyright.] j WELLINGTON, Thursday. The New Zealand Maufacturers Federation has issued the following statement: “The Prime Minister, the HI. Hon, M. J. Savage, stated in an interview that our production gives no evidence of breaking down, and therefore a slump can only happen when people are unable to buy what they are able to produce. We must point out, firstly that production is breaking down under the twin burdens of high costs and imports, and secondly, that, in consequence, people are not only unable to buy what thay produce.—they are unable to produce. Unless the Government takes remedial action New Zealand will become a country of public works and, imports, and workers in industry will find that there is no place for them in national economy. It will indeed be a hopeless position for the worker with a family when relief work replaces the pay envelope for a steady and permanent job in industry. No worker should be denied the privilege of selecting the market in which to sell his services.”
