Drowning Accident Off 90-Mile Beach
t Special to “Northern Advocate .”l KAITAIA. This Day. When a small, open boat capsized about a mile from the shore, a drowning accident, involving the death of a Maori youth, occurred at the NinetyMile Beach yesterday morning. The victim was; Darby TahTi. aged about 19 years Tire deceased left Ahipara with a companion, on a fishing trip, the boat capsizing in a heavy sea. Both managed to cling to the bottom of the upturned craft, which slowly drifted toward the shore. When about aquarter of a mile from the beach, however, the anchor apparently caught on the bottom, and stopped the boat from going further in-shore. Messrs. F. Urlich, R, Rudolph and B.
Rudolph, who witnessed the accident, swam out when they saw the boat was not coming any closer. Just before they reached the craft, a large wave overturned it. and Tabu disappeared. It is thought that the boat, in turning over, struck him on the head, as he was not seen again. When taken ashore. Paul Edwards, the other occupant of the boat, was suffering from exposure, but his condition was not serious. So far. Tabu’s body has not been recovered. although parties are now searching the beach.
