Detton Wins Spectacular Match
Wrestling
[Special to “Northern Advocate. - ’! AUCKLAND, This Day. Characterised by the spectacular methods employed. Monday night’s professional wrestling contest between “Cowboy” Pat Fraley, 16st., and exworld champion Dean Detton, Isst. 31bs., which the latter won by a submission fall gained in the second round by a step-over toehold, was remarkable for the astonishing speed, and this, coupled with an almost inexhaustible supply of holds, kept the crowd on tiptoe, making the bout one which will be remembered for some time among the ranks of wrestling enthusiasts in Auckland. The opening stages saw Detton taking the offensive, and, clapping on a painful reverse wristlock, he held Fraley in that position, despite frantic attempts to escape, until the gong. Coming fast out of his corner with the bell, Detton immediately obtained another wrist-lock, which, as the opportunity presented, he changed to a step-over toehold. Fraley immediately submitted and Detton was ahead by one fall. Fraley was caught napping several times by Detton, who, as soon as the timekeeper raised the hammer, was half-way across the ring. When the gong sounded to commence, Detton was already on top of Fraley, who had little time to get clear or defend himself. There was a sensation in the sixth round, when the pair met in mid-air with simultaneous drop-kicks. They fell flat to the mat, where Detton was first to recover, and pounced upon Fraley. He was, however, unable to secure a fall. The last round was monopolised by Fraley, but he could not obtain a fall, so that when the end came Detton was declared the winner.
