Assassins as Nazi Martyrs
LONDON, July 25. Vienna is celebrating a day of national pride to commemorate the assassination of the former Chancellor, Dr. Dcllfuss. Replacing the memorial masses said in his honour in previous years, today is being devoted to the glorification of Otto Planetta and his 12 associates, who were hanged for the murder of the Chancellor four years ago. “The Times,” in an editorial, says: “Nothing better illustrates the wide gulf between the Nazi outlook and British and other public opinion than the honouring of the murderers of Dr. Dollfuss. Dr. Dollfuss died in a spirit of Christian charity, forgiving his murderers. It is too much to hope his conquerors will show the same spirit towards Dr. Schuschnigg, languishing untried in solitary confinement because, like Dr. Dollfuss, he did what he saw as his duty.”
