Favourite Australian Film At Plaza
All the broad, robust humour of Steele Rudd’s immortal stories of the Australian ‘‘bush’’ was recreated on the screen for the Whangarei public at the Flaza Theatre on Saturday night, when “On Our Selection” opened its return season. It was anticipated that the revisit of the film to Whangarei would be a popular choice. and so it proved, Saturday night's showing providing a continuous roar of mirth from start to finish. “What this country needs,” says “Dad." “ is a darn good laugh!" and “by cripes,” he and “Dave” and the rest of the Rudd family provide the material in goodly measure. “Dad” entertaining the parson, chasing errant) pigs in the middle of a river, and standing for Parliament, are a few of the highlights of the film, with “Dave” courting as only “Dave” can, setting up house, and trying to “touch” his irascible parent for “a hundred quid” on the side. All the wranglings. struggles, loves and joys of the lovable Australian family are faithfully portrayed, with a charming love interest provided by the romance of the elder daughter. Romance also enters into the life of the younger daughter, but does not come to fruition until after her falsetto-voiced swain has had the seat of Iris pants peppered with shot from “Dad’s” gun. An associate feature of particular interest is “A Nation is Built,” which, jin addition to tracing much of the I early history of Australian settlement | and development, deals in a remark- | ably interesting and concise manner j with the unlimited pastoral, agriculj tural and industrial resources of the ! Commonwealth. j The pi’ogramme is to be screened j again this evening.
