“Popeye the Sailor” At Auckland
[Special to “Norinern Advocate.”} AUCKLAND, This Day. Assembled on Princes Wharf, beneath a banner of welcome, a crowd of children expectantly called, as the Matson liner, Monterey, berthed today, for Billy Costello, described as the original “Popeye the Sailor,” the man who gives the famous movie cartoon character his gruff, salty voice. Costello today began the story of his career with the years when he played drums in Paul Whiteman’s renowned orchestra. He joined the National Broadcasting company of America as a sound-effects expert, imitating voices and other sounds of various kinds. Then the Hollywood studio which makes the "Popeye” cartoons asked Costello to provide the comic sailor’s voice. The cartoon became so successful that he decided to exploit as well the stage possibilities of the innovation.
