Pacific Liners Miss The Tide: Lost Opportunity
(Received 8.30 a.m.) LONDON. July 23. In connection with the decision not to have two new Pacific liners built, Sir Edward Beatty, chairman of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, and Lord Craigmyle, chairman of the P. & O. Steam Navigation Company, have issued a joint statement. This states that plans and specifications for two new ships wei’e submitted to selected shipbuilders. Unfortunately, however, shipbuilding costs have reached an uneconomical peak, and accordingly it was decided that construction at present was impracticable. It is understood that the decision is the sequel to the Governmental procrastination and lost opportunity, says the Australian Associated Press. The British and Dominions Governments, excepting Canada, earlier agreed t Q have a scheme when construction could have been achieved for £2,500,000, compared with the present estimate of £5,000.000. Canada finally acquiesced, but it was too late.
