Next Week’s Boxing Tourney
With no less than 18 amateur bouts, > boys coming from Hamilton, Auckland, Dargaville and Awanui to match themselves against the local talent, the boxing tournament to be staged next week by the, Whangarei Boxing Association promises to provide a galaxy pf good clean thrills for local boxing fans. The revival of interest in the sport now evident throughout the whole of the Dominion leaves little room for doubt that the association’s efforts to bring the sport again before the Whangarei public will be attended by every success. Dargaville has been holding its end up, and at an excellent tournament staged earlier this month it was revealed that the west coast centre has a number of good lads in Moran, Canavan and Phelan, who are in a class equal to any other amateurs in New Zealand. Whangarei itself has several prom- > ising young boxers who should give a good account of themselves at the forthcoming local fixture. Notable among these are Painter, Alach, Fairley, Muir, Fidler, Crump and Welch. Max Alach is a boy who should go a long way in .the game. Fast on his feet and packing a nice left hand, he should, with a little more knowledge and ringcraft, be a hard man to beat even in exclusive company. After having had only four fights he visited Dargaville for the recent tournament and in a hard battle with Ken Moran, Auckland and New Zealand champion flyweight and Empire Games representative, gave an account of himself worthy of a considerably more experienced boxer. Although beaten on points, Max undoubtedly put up a cx'editable show, and experts who have seen him in action are unanimous in opinion that he has a promising future ahead. The local tournament is to be held in the Whangarei Town Hall next Saturday, July 30.
