Vancouver Island Swept By Fire: Sabotage Charge
VANCOVER, July 21. The worst forest fires in the history of British Columbia are sweeping Vancouver Island over an (area of 15 miles by eight miles. Forbes Landing, a summer resort, was wiped out after two Canadian destroyers had evacuated the population of 500. Six other towns are feared to be doomed. The timber loss is estimated to exceed 2,000,000 dollars. Thirty-five fire-fightei's have been dismissed, and now face arrest following sabotage disclosures. In seven places, a hose was found ruined with knives. Forbes Landing pumps were wrecked during the night, and the petrol tanks of three fire-fighting tractors were found to contain sugar. Seventeen hundred men have been recruited to fight the flames, including 200 from Vancouver, who are former post office sit-down strikers and rioters.
