Benefit Ball Draws Huge Crowd

In vivid contrast to the night outside. where pavements ran with water and the sky was filled with storm, the Town Hall presented a gay scene on Wednesday evening last for the occasion of the Bargain Store Benefit Ball. Flags and bunting hung from the ceiling and potted shrubs added to the decorations. Little ladies in the daintiest of gowns braved the elements, escorted, of course, by their menfolk who complained not at all. Before the function had long commenced, a crowd of more than 800 thronged the ballroom. As it was, the record for the hall was almost broken, and had the weather been fine, doubtless many more would have graced the Town Hall with their presence. But the ball was a success. Takings £IOO. From the financial point of view alone it was a sterling effort, and the Kupe Club’s Orphanage' Building Fund will benefit to the extent of approximately £IOO. The Bargain Stores Social Club originated the idea, but the lion’s share of the work fell to the lot of Mr J. S. T. Tudehope and Mr R. Johnston, who, as organisers, merit the greatest praise. It was, however, in no small sense, a community effort, Whangarei business people co-operating in the fullest extent to make the ball such an outstanding success. In particular must be mentioned the Women’s Institutes, which, under the leadership of Mrs C. E. Hirtzel, attended to supper arrangements. With thei'r huge task of catering for the crowd, workers received much help from Mr McKinnon and the staff of the Marble Bar. Six Orchestras Play. From another aspect, too, the night was a grand one. Not one, but six of Whangarei’s orchestras combined to give dancers all that could he desired in the way of music. Cunningham’s Orchestra, the Melody Makers, Pomery Bros,, Dickinson’s Band, Scylla Calkin’s Band, and Ces Wn'ght’s Band, all played—and they “played” well—their part, whilst Ray Goodison’s Orchestra, unfortunately unable to participate, showed their goodwill by sending along a donation. Dancing included many novelties. The Dionne Quints, ft was announced, just might be the first occupants of the -Orphanage, and the thought was an inspiration for a novelty dancing competition which was won by Miss Lacey and Mr Barber. . ' Occasional items brought to light outstanding talent, adding in no small measure to the entertainment of patrons, and giving dancers a breathing space. Pennies In the Ring. When the Warrington Sisters’ Ballet, clad in stage tatters, gave a ballroom rendering of “Won’t You Buy My Pretty Flowers?” it was the occasion for coin-throwing, and 14/9 was collected in this way. “Pop-Eye” Gribble and his Ranch Boys were tremendously popular, their rendering of “Western” song hits being in perfect harmony with the high spirits of the dancers. Mr L%o Jackson, Whangarei’s Larry Addler, was another great success with his mouthorgan/playing many a special request number. The Whangaruru Entertainers were a distinct find. Not only could they perform hakas with true Maori zeal, but their musical ability was outstanding., Their items spoke in glowfng terms of the training given the party by their leader, Mr Walter Martin. Many Lend Their Aid. Among the many who assisted were Wilkinson’s and Whangarei Bakeries, the Balmoral Home Cookery, Hellaby’s, the Nikau Bacon Factory, Aulsebrooke’s, Nestles, Mr C. L. Innes, the Women’s Institutes, Hansen’s Ra-
