Calf Club Move Grows In Whangarei

There was a fair attendance at the annual meeting of the Whangarei Calf Club Group on Thursday night. The balance sheet showed a satisfactory profit on the year s working. In presenting the annual report, the president, Mr V. Taylor, commented on the .increased number of calves judged at the schools in the district during the past season. Lambs And Goats Appear. Five hundred and eight calves were entered ,for competition in the Whangarei district during 1937 against 430 in 1936, and 160 in 1935. Lamb clubs made their debut with 97 entries and 12 goats were reared in connection with school competitions. Forty-five schools participated in the calf club scheme compared with 53 in 1936 and 23 in 1935. “The fall in the number of schools competing may be accounted for by the fact that some of the smaller schools have been closed or consolidated,” remarked Mr Taylor. “With the increase in the number of calves presented,” he continued, “and the fact that Mr J. H. Dennehy, Agricultural Instructor to schools, was not able to give us so much time as previously, an added burden was placed upon the committee. I wish to thank those men who so ably assisted the work by giving their services and the use of their cars in transporting the judges to the schools. I also wish to thank the Minister of Agriculture for consenting to lend us the services of Mr Glanville to assist with the judging at schools.

Improved Parade. "The- central parade at Kensington Park proved a success and I was 1 greatly impressed by the marked improvement as compared with the par-., ade last year. There was no noticeable falling away in standard after the prize winners had been taken out. This was also apparent at the schools which I had the privilege of visiting and this fact has been commented upon by other members of the committee. This is where I feel the greatest good was achieved last year that all calves came nearer the high standard set by the winners. “Great services were rendered by the competent men who assisted us with the judging. To them I wish to tender the thanks of the Club." Expressions ot Thanks. Mr Taylor also thanked Mr J. H. Dennehy and Mr E. B. Glanville. The A. and P. Society, by catering for calves in their annual stock show, should give club members an incentive to continue with their calves, the president said. He also mentioned the assistance Calf Clubs had received from Kupe and the “Northern Advocate.” “I would commend to all members

the Calf Club booklet which will be issued within the next few days, ’ Mr Taylor said. “It has been carefully prepared by Mr Dennehy and contains helpful articles by prominent men.” In conclusion Mr Taylor thanked the executive and members of the committee for co-operation during the past season. Over-Conditioned Calves. There was considerable discussion on the question of over-conditioned

calves. It was felt that some judges had been disqualifying for this fault intsead of only penalising up to three points. This subject is to be specially, mentioned in the new judging sheet in order that judges may know the position definitely. A suitable badge is to be issued to all winners of challenge cups at the last central parade and the purchase of a suitable badge was left to the secretary and treasurer. Amended Rules. The following alterations to rules ] were made: — a Rule 14; Add “no oiling.” This rule now provides that no trimming, clip- ' ping or oiling of calves is permitted. ( Allocation of points: In future “skin L and bloom or finish” will be bracketed, giving 20 points. The purpose of this alteration is to. prevent the ’ child whose calf has a poor skin from being too severely penalised. Lambs: Judging will be based on the following points.—General appearance of lamb, 40; handling or shepherding, 30; records, 4 30. , Official Personnel. , Officers were elected as follows; — ; Patron, Dr. G. Walker; president, i Mr V. Taylor; vice-president, Mr H. i Parkin; secretary, Mr K. Hayr; treasurer, Mr C. S. Going. Executive, • Messrs H. Rusk, E. Babe, W. G. Birdi ling, G. Russell, and J. Pattison. Gen- . eral committee, Messrs A. Crawford, C G. Russell, W. G. Birdling. F. Rusk, C. 5 Wright, Dick Fraser. J. Pattison. t C. Babe, H. Rusk, Thomas (Parua Bay), and Billington (Marua).

* Appreciation of the services rendered by last year’s president, secretary and treasurer was placed on record.
