War Pensioner Charged With Fraud
[Per Press Association. Copyright .] CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. A plea oi not guilty was entered by George Withers, aged 58, a married man with eight children, when he was charged in the police court with defrauding the Government of £628. Withers was committed for trial. A pensions clerk stated in evidence that Withers, who was a war pensioner, had said he had been working since 1935, and had made several false statements to the Pension Department. Accused had also made false statements on behalf of his wife, and, although she had been entitled to nothing, because of her husband’s earnings, she had received £5Ol/2. Withers himself had received £340, but had only been entitled to £213. In an alleged statement to DetectiveSergeant McClung, Withers admitted receiving the money, saying he had been heavily in debt. He had served in both the Boer and Great Wars and since the Armistice had been operated on seven times for war wounds. Bail of £2OO was allowed
