Support For Calf Pool Urged
The Maungaluroto Dairy Company lacks 38 signatures to give it the necessary 80 per cent, of suppliers to form a bobby calf pool. At Wednesday’s annual meeting the chairman, Mr D. A. Finlayson, said that a special effort would be made within the next few days to have the balance of signatures in hand. In his annual report, Mr Finlayson dealt at some length with the bobby calf pool project and made a strong plea for support for the pool. “In the first place,” he said, “the Government was considering inaugurating a national bobby calf pool, but when we took a postal vote on it only 29 suppliers out of our 333 took the trouble to vote on the question. The majority of those 29 were in favour of the scheme, as were some other factories all over the Auckland Province. Taranaki, however, was opposed to the scheme, and when the Government saw there was little interest taken in the scheme, they would not take a hand. “We have, therefore, been campaigning to get 80'per cent, of our suppliers to combine and form a protected pool of our own. We are still a few signatures short, but we are making a special effort within the next few days to get the required 40 more. If It Fails. . . . “Dairy companies all round us have taken up the scheme and if it fails here it is possible fancy prices will be paid hero with the object of breaking up the neighbouring pools. It must be the aim of the pool to support our own company and support our own organisation,” concluded Mr Finlayson. Later in the meeting Mr Finlayson said that as soon as the required number of signatures had been obtained, a special meeting of the pool would be called and a committee appointed to run the scheme. Present, indications are that a pool would be formed this year, although suppliers were somewhat worried owing to the shortness of the time before the calving season began in earnest.
