Dairymen Discuss Various Topics

A notice of motion tabled by Mr M. Maras provoked a discussion on a wide variety of topics at Wednesday’s annual meeting of the Maungaturoto Dairy Company. The notice of motion was to the effect that the number of directors be reduced to three—one each for Western, Central and Eastern wards. When asked to move his resolution, Mr Maras said that after considering the matter from all angles he had decided to withdraw the motion.

In thanking Mr Maras for his action, the chairman, Mr D. A. Finlayson, said the directors served a very use- " ful purpose, and it would not be wise to reduce them. Although the Government had taken over the sale of butter, this had relieved the whole board of little labour, as formerly the butter had been sold by a small subcommittee between each meeting. The present board had worked harmoniously thi’oughout the year, every member doing his best for the company. Answering Mr A, Newitt. Mr Fmlayson said the chairman paid his own travelling expenses when attending conferences outside his own district. Mr Newitt moved that in future the chairman’s travelling expenses be paid, the motion being carried unanimously. Zoning Problems. Mr F. E. Cullen: When the zoning took place I promised new suppliers they would have representation on our board. I claim that is voted and should be honoured and met now. I would like to see representatives of Kaiwaka and Ararua on the board so to honour my promise. “In approaching Mr Wansbone the board had it in mind that he would serve the Ararua district,” said the chairman. “Regarding Kaiwaka. we have that district in mind, and should a vacancy occur on the present, board,! Kaiwaka will receive every consider- ■ alien." Mr E. Underwood said the district j should be in wards, as m that case j each ward would have its own district j representative. | “One of the drawbacks of tho ward j system,” said tho chairman, “was that voting was confined to the ward i member only, and the directors elected were not truly representative of the suppliers as a whole.” Stating that the articles of associ- i ation would have to be altered prior ! to lito adoption of the ward system, j j Mr Cullen asked iT tho people of Ara- j j nm were consulted before Mr Wans-1 bone was selected to represent them j on tho board, I Tho chairman explained that tho! J articles of association laid il down j (hat a supplier. In bo eligible for the board, had to have at least. £l.O of j capital in the company, and no one in i Ararua had this amount in the com- j nany. Mr Wansbone had been of! orcal assistance to the board in the Ararua district, he said. The discussion lapsed without any motion being passed. J
