Rev. G. V. Gerard To Be Bishop Of Waiapu
AUCKLAND, This Day. U was announced last night that ilia Rev. G. V. Gerard. Vicar of St. Matthew's. Auckland, had been selected Bishop of the diocese of Waiapu, in succession to the late Rt. Rev. H. W. Williams, whose death occurred suddenly in December last. Mr. Gerard, who is in his 39th year, is a son of Mr. and Mrs. George Gerard, of “Snowden" Station, ML Butt, Canterbury. He was educated at. Christ's College. Christchurch, where he distinguished himself in sport. At the outbreak of the Great War he obtained a commission in the Royal West Kent Regiment, and saw service in France, receiving the Military Cross in 1918. After the war. he continued his studies at Oxford, taking his. M.A. degree in 1925. After being in charge of several parishes m New Zealand, he was appointed Vicar of St, Matthew's in January, 193 C.
