Cyclist Hit; Motorist Drives On

Found staggering across the road near the Walton Street overhead railway bridge yesterday afternoon, after being struck by a motor-car, the driver of which has not yet been ascertained. Mr Ernest Smith, of Railway Road, was taken to the Whangarei Public Hospital suffering from severe bruises and abrasions. Mr Smith, a middle-aged married man, employed by the Whangarei Borough Council, was riding his bicycle in the vicinity of the overhead bridge when the accident occurred. It was only by using his arm as a fend against the car that he had saved himself from being swept underneath the vehicle. s'jpST Although assistance was immediately forthcoming, it is not yet known who v/as the driver of the motor-car.
