Noted Northland Dairy Expert Dead

[Special to “Northern Advocate.”] AUCKLAND, This Day. The death has occurred of Mr Joseph Wallace Smith, an officer of the Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture. Mr Smith was born at Matakana in 1889. His father, Mr Joseph Smith, was at one time manager for Sir George Grey on Kawau Island. Mr Smith commenced his career in the dairying industry as an assistant in the Matakana dairy factory. In 1922 he was appointed dairy instructor of the Dairy Division, and was stationed at Palmerston North. In 1931 he was transferred to Whangarei as butter instructor for the Northland dairy companies, and became highly popular among all sections of the industry. During 1933 he was appointed superintendent of the Massey College dairy factory and held that position until transferred to the Auckland grading staff in 1937. In his younger days Mr Smith represented Northern Wairoa and Hawke’s Bay at Rugby. He is survived by In's wife, three sons and one daughter.
