Mental Hospital Attendant Charged With Striking Patient

At the* instigation of the DirectorGeneral of Health. Bruce Moffat Jordan. mental hospital attendant, aged 26, was charged in the Police. Court with striking a patient in the Otago Mental Hospital. Seacliff. on December 0 last. Accused pleaded not guilty.
Mr Deaker. for the prosecution, stated that on the date named a patient struck accused, breaking his denture. Later in the evening, accused was seen to enter the patient's room, and next morning the patient was suffering from a broken jaw. Tire State’s responsibility to protect patients was very great, for if it. did not accord protection, relatives would
be very uneasy, added Mr Deaker. Fortunately, this type of offence was uncommon, bid when it was alleged to occur the State's duly was clear. It
was impossible to get a statement from tho patient, and one attendant who we; to give evidence had since died. The case was adjourned.
