In the finals of the ladies’ singles in the German tennis championship. Miss Lumb defeated Miss Wynne. 6—3, 6—4. In the semi-final of the ladies' doubles, Misses Wynne and Coyne defeated Misses Lumb and Scoll, C—3, 6—3, and Mrs Hopman and Miss Stevenson defeated Mrs. Heine Miller and Miss Mnrphcw, 6—4, 4—6, 6—4. In the combined doubles. Baworowski and Mile. Jedrzejowska defeated Avery and Mrs. Hopman, 6—3, 11—9. and Le Sueur and Miss Wynne defeated Fctra and Mrs. Heine Miller, 10—8. 6—o. Official messages from Walden burg, Silesia, allege that the Czechs are mobilising in the Sudeten German district along the Silesian borders. The Czech Government officially denies mobilisation on the Silesian or any other frontier, says a message from Prague.
Both Parliament and the press arc alarmed about the serious situation of British shipping and ship-building proposals. They are remarking upon the sharp contrast between British tonnage and the activity in foreign yards. For the first time in history, more tonnage is being built abroad for British firms than is being built in Britain for foreigners.
