Kaikohe To Organise Fire Brigade Week

Another progressive step in Kaikohe was taken on Tuesday night when a well-attended meeting of citizens was held to further the interests of the volunteer fire brigade. Mr R. H. Carey, superintendent of the brigade, addressed the meeting giving some interesting data regarding the wastage by fire in New Zealand, Ausiralia and England. “Strangely enough,” said Mr Carey, “the citizens generally are peculiarly apathetic in their attitude towards brigade work, particularly in the smaller areas where the brigade volunteers give their time for the benefit of the community with little or no remuneration." More Interest Urged. The time had arrived in Kaikohe when a keener interest in such organisations was necessary on the part of the general public, he continued. The alternative would be to levy a rate to maintain the service and supply the necessary equipment. It was decided that a citizens committee should organise a “Fire Brigade Week” annually. The following will represent the committee:—President, Mr G. E. S, Brodie; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. F C'Grady; and Messrs C. Beamish, G. Wilson, L. A. Cooke, J. Verran, P. Coyne, J. E. Lowe, A. J. Edwards. W. Shaw, C. Cameron, S. G. Robinson, R. Pearson, C. Robertson, J. Crawley, L. B. Savage. F. J. Williams and J, Hinton.

A ladies’ sociad committee was formed, comprising Mesdames W. Shaw, A. J. Edwards, L. A. Cooke. G. E. S. Brodie. J. Crawley, L. B. Savage. C. Beamish, and Miss F. Carey.
