Heather on Gum-Land. Gum-lands still have their uses. In the Northern Wairoa district there is always a ready demand for the heather which grows profusely on old kauri land. Every year large qudntitie of heather are sent from the West Coast in the vicinity of Dargaville to various centres in both North land South Islands where good sales are always assured. This year the crop is coming forward very well, and gatherers are making a substantial profit from their efforts. * • • • Flying-Officers Promoted. The Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, has announced the promotion of three officers in the New Zealand Air Force, as follows: —Wing-Com-mander L. M. Isitt, to be groupcaptain; Squadron-Leader A. de T. Nevill, to be wing-commander; FlightLieutenant T. J. Denton, to be squad-ron-leader. It was also announced that advice had been received from the Air Ministry in London of the promotion of Flight-Lieutenant L. Crocker to the rank of squadronleader.

Crawford relative to a meeting of representatives of local bodies to be held at Kaikohe to discuss details regarding the Northland Court at the Centennial Exhibition, the Bay of Islands County Council at its meeting on Thursday appointed the following delegates to represent the council: Messrs H. T. Atkinson, S. W. Smith, J. Hay and D. Rintoul. A letter from the Auckland Provincial Centennial Exhibition Committee asking for a contribution of £l2l towards the cost of the provincial court was received.

Railwaymen’s Protest. > The Whangarei branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Workers, at a meeting on Wednesday, expressed its views in no uncertain manner upon the comments relating to recent railway accidents in New Zealand, made by Mr W. P. Endean, M.P. for Parnell, in the House of Representatives recently. The following resolution was passed unanimously:— “That this branch protests against Mr Endean’s remarks regarding the lack of discipline and loyalty on the part of the railway staff, and expresses absolute confidence in our present administration.” In addition to being handed to the press, copies of the , resolution are being forwarded to the Minister of Railways, the Hon.
