Orphanage Entertainment At Purua

An enjoyable evening was spent in tile Purua Hall on July 9, when a combined picture show and dance was held in aid of .the Tikipunga Orphanage Fund. Five members of the Hupp Club —Misses Winnie. Gladys and Lilian Drake, and Mr.yna and Pa.t Frond were responsible for the organisation, a task in which they received the utmost encouragement and support of parents. Kupc and Princess Raranga, of the "Northern Advocate." wore introduced lo the gathering by Mr A. T. Frond, and there followed an hour’s moving picture entertainment. At intervals Young Northlanders entertained as fellows: Recitation. Miss Mcyna Frond (“Cheap Mutton"); song. Miss Velma Wright ("Who’ll Buy My Lavender"); recitation, Margaret Finlayson ("The Barber”); pianoforte duet. Misses Lilian and Gladys Drake ("Happy Go Lucky"); pianoforte solo. Lilian Drake < ‘-Narcissus” >; and a combined school song, “The Moon Has Made a Silver Road" by the girls.

During an interval. Kupe announced that ihe £3OO mark had already been reached, and held out high hopes of reaching the total of £6OO required t? build the Orphanage in the not too distant future.

Whilst grown-ups danced, Kupe and Princess Raranga chatted to Young North landers, who decided that a branch club should be formed at Purua.

After supper, four tiny maidens took part in a pretty ceremony when Isobel Dyer, Margaret Finlayson, Joyce Dyer and Pauline Thomas marched the length of the hall and presented a sheaf of flowers to- Princess Raranga.

Competitions, with a rooster, donated by Mr and Mrs Frood and family, and a decorated cake donated by Mr and Mrs R. A. Drake and family, -as prizes, were arranged, the lucky winners being Mrs E. Heath and Mr W. A. Wilson.

At the conclusion of the evening, Mr Frood thanked Kupe and Princess Raranga for attending, and handed over £6 8/-, which had been collected for the Orphanage Fund as a resuli of the function.

For the dance, Mr Frood was M.C. Music was supplied by Mesdames E. Carrington, C. A. Reed. Princess Raranga, and Misses Gladys and Lilian Drake (piano), Messrs L. Drake and R. A. Drake (accordeon). A. Thomassen (piano-accordeon, accompanied by Mrs H. Ccombe, piano), and A. Thomassen (cornet, accompanied by Mrs C. A. Reed, piano). The Monte Carlo competition was won by Miss W. Drake and Mr L. Clark. Among those present were: —Princess Raranga, floral crepe; Mesdames E. Carrington, black lace frock, black coatee; C. A. Reed, brown chiffon velvet; R. R. Thomas, Marina blue crepe satin; R. Dyer, navy cloque; G. 8,. Dyer, jade taffeta, sequin trimmings; R, A. Drake, green metalessc silk; H. Coombe, rose crinkle crepe; M. Drake (Tangowahine), blue georgette. Misses Ellen Drake, apricot tinsel striped marocain; Gladys Drake, nile green crepe-de-chine: Dorrie Drake, pale blue velvet; Winnie Drake, powder blue satin; Katie Ercog, black crepe; Dixlcie Johnson, pink pebble crepe.
