Wealthy Negro Runs Amok

(Received 8.30. a,m.) NEW YORK, July 14. A wealthy negro landowner, W. D. Register, today shot dead his wife and a white man, and wounded three others before he himself was killed by a petrol station attendant, says a message from Hawkins, Texas. Register, who owned several oil wells, first killed his wife with a rifle, and critically wounded a negro farm employee. He then marched along the highway, where he encountered a white man driving home his cows, and shot him dead. Continuing he met a negro, whom he wounded, and then fired on a passing motor car containing a white man and his wife, shattering the former’s arm and killing a dog. A group of men, all armed, barricaded the road, but Register opened fire on them. The first shot of a petrol station attendant, who was in the barricade party, instantly killed Register.
