Britain's one-man regiment, the North Irish Horse, will disappear with the retirement of Major Sir Ronald Ross, upon reaching the age limit. Since the war the rank and file have terminated their engagements, and all the other officers have reached the age limit. The regiment’s battle honours include Mons, Marne, Aisne, Albert, Messines, Ypres. Bapaume and Cambrai. An important case arising from the alleged activities of Nazi organisations in the United States, was heard in Court when six officers of the socalled German-American Settlement League, which has thousands of members, were convicted of violating the State Civil Rights Law. Each was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment, which, with the exception of that on the president, was suspended. Each was also fined 500 dollars. The league was fined 10,000 dollars. Evidence was deduced that members took the oath of allegiance to Herr Hitler. « * * • After a busy year of engagements, the Duchess of Gloucester has been ordered to take complete rest, and the Duke and Duchess, instead of going to Scotland as intended, will Idave shortly for Kenya, from which they will return early in November. The Duchess, before her marriage, spent much time in Kenya, where her uncle, Lord Francis Scott, owns “Deloraine,” one of the biggest farms in the colony. The Duke visited Kenya in 1928 in company with the Prince of Wales. £ * * » The freighter Ready, which went ashore on Boer’s reef, off the coast of North Queensland, on July 5, while being towed by the tug J. A. Boyd, en L-oute for Shanghai, has been refloated. The Ready, with a heavy load of coal, was originally steaming independently with the Frosty Moller convoy, which left Sydney on May 21 for Shanghai. Her engines broke down, however, and she was taken in tow by the J. A. Boyd, which had been herself in tow of the Frosty Moller, along with another small vessel.

Australian exports for the fiscal year ended June 30 exceeded her imports by only £11.850.000 sterling, which is the narrowest margin since' the degression. The London funds will be called upon for about £10,700,000 to cover the shortage between the trade balance and Australia’s fixed overseas annual commitment, amounting to about £22.500,000 sterling,

President Roosevelt won another victory in the primary elections when Senator Elmer Thomas, whom he had endorsed for re-election, appeared to have won the Democratic nomination over Mr Gomer Smith, states a message from Oklahoma City,

President Roosevelt today issued the'revised Budget figures for the 1938-39 fiscal year. Expenditures in the current fiscal year will total 8,985,000,000 dollars, due to 'recession relief payments. Receipts are estimated at only 5,001,000,000 dollars, also due to the recession.- This deficit is estimated at 3,984,000,000 dollars, and the gross public debt at 40,650,000,000 dollars, a record. •

The strike for higher wages of labourers on the Suez Canal has been settled. « * * * The Secretary for Air, Sir Kingsley Wood, said that Sir Hardman Lever was heading a mission to Canada to negotiate with the industry for the manufacture of bombers in Canada. * £ * * Mr R. A. Butler, Foreign Undersecretary, stated in the House of Commons that, because of rumours, Japan had, informed Britain that she had no intention of using the situation in China as a pretext for denying Britain’s or other Powers’ extraterritorial rights in areas occupied by Japan. Japan merely asserted that she would act against foreigners impeding military operations, * « * * It is announced from Hankow that 200 people were killed find wounded in an air raid at Wuchang. The wing of an hospital was demolished, and many patients and members of the staff were crushed in the debris. In the raid on Canton 23 were killed and 38 wounded. * ♦ m * The Duke and Duchess of Windsor have chartered the schooner-rigged twin-screw yacht Gulzar. Accompanied by Mr and Mrs Herman Rogers, they embarked at Antibes for a fortnight’s cruise in the Mediterranean. * * * •. A visual telephone system, enabling users to see each other, has been inaugurated between Berlin and Munich. This adds 100 miles to the 300-mile line from Nuremburg to Berlin which has been operating similarly since last year. The small screen is similar to that used in radio television, but the ultra-red rays restore platinum blondes to their original shades if they are not genuine, and show up men’s beards even if they are perfectly shaven.

Speaking in the House of Commons Mr Chamberlain said that for various reasons it had been found impossible to arrange the formation of an international commission to inquire into aerial bombardments in Spain. The Government proposed to dispatch a commission of two Britishers at the earliest possible date.
