Parking In Whangarei

THE new parking regulations adopted by the Whangarei Borough Council are not likely to please everyone, but the sub-committee which framed them must be complimented on the thoroughness of its work, for it lias obviously devoted much time and thought to the various factors involved. Chief among these is the convenience of the public as a whole, blit it should not lie forgotten that, provided he is not trespassing on the rights of others, the motorist is entitled to the same consideration as any other member of the community. The welfare of business people has also to be considered. Motorists bring to the town a great deal of business. If they cannot transact it conveniently, at the shop of their first choice, they may transfer their business elsewhere. It is therefore important that customers of firms in the business areas of the town should not be made to feel that they are being harassed. Much depends on the spirit in which the new regulations are interpreted and administered. Pin-pricking methods should be avoided, and allowance should be made by traffic officials for the occasional delays that are often inseparable from the transaction of business. There should be a readiness to accept reasonable explanations, and a tolerant and helpful attitude toward the first offender, or to those who infringe through ignorance. The proposal to have folders printed, defining the restrictions, is a very good one. Steps should be taken to see that all motorists, not only in the borough of Whangarei, but also in surrounding districts, of which Whangarei is the centre, receive these folders. It would be a good idea in future to issue one with every driving license.
