Professionals At Mt. Denby

Golf

A “ rn CC Golf of an impressive standard was seen on the Mount Denby links on Saturday afternoon, when a professional exhibition match was played between E. Moss and J. Galloway and A. Murray and W. Allbon. in the form of a four-ball-bes:-bal!. The weather, cold and. showery, did not provide the best of conditions, but the players adapted themselves to uncomfortable circumstances to stage an unusually interesting match, which was witnessed by a large gallery of the public.

The first and second holes were halved in* par figures, but Moss and Gallcway took the lead at the third when Galloway holed a good putt. The cold wind made it difficult for the players to find touch with their clubs.

At the fourth, Murray, Allbon and Moss were on the green nicely from the tec, and the hole was halved, in three. At the next hole Murray found his second had finished to the left of the green, and he had to negotiate a tree to reach the green. He played this shot nicely, only to miss the putt for bogey figures. ’Meanwhile, the others were on for two and down for two more.

Moss found trouble with his second at the Avenue, but played a masterly chip from under the tree to hole his putt for a four. Allbon, who was on for two, just missed a long one lor a win. At the next hole, Murray, who was driving particularly well, outdistanced the others by 30 yards. All played perfect seconds, and it fell to Galloway to stroke one in for three, putting his side two up.

Moss made no mistake at tire dogleg, and, after two well-controlled shots to the green, carded a four, to increase the lead to three. Playing the ninth into the wind found Murray off the green to the right, while the others were handy for possible twos. Here Moss gave the gallery a thrill by sinking one of those tricky sloping putts for which he is well-known. The ball, nicely-struck, rolled round the slope, and his two was loudly applauded.

Moss and Galloway stood four up at the turn. Although the outward figures broke no records, the golf was steady, and, except for one or two lapses on the green, well up to stand-

Coming Home. Coming home, the 10th and 41th holes were halved in orthodox figures. At the 12th. Murray electrified the spectators by a tremendous drive from the tee. a second played to within three feet and a steady putt for a three, reducing the lead by one. The short hole gave no chances, and threes were carded for it to be halved. Poor putting at the 14th enabled Allbon and Murray to further reduce the deficit to two.

Flaying to the temporary green, Galloway holed a good putt for a four, but Allbon came from the skies to hole one from 12 feet for a three. At the 3 6th, it appeared that there might be an exciting finish. The four drives from the tee were practically lined up, and Allbon found the green to finish four feet from the flag. It seemed that the match might be all square, but Galloway went one better, and laid his second inches from the hole. Allbon missed the putt, and the game went to the 17th. with Moss and Galloway dormy two. The hole was played steadily, and a half gave Moss and Galloway the match.

That the efforts of the club in bringing these professionals to Whangarei so that enthusiasts of the game might have an opportunity of seeing the Dominion's top men in action were appreciated, was shown by the generous .applause which" followed the men throughout the "game and at the conclusion of the match.
