Compulsory Unionism Objectionable
—MR HAMILTON,
“There is no more objectionable legislation this Government has passed than that of compulsory unionism,” declared the Hon. Adam Hamilton, Leader of the Opposition, in his adcress at Whangarei on'Saturday night. “I have no complaint to make about unionism,” Mr Hamilton continued. “The working people are entitled to their unions, but to bring it in as compulsory for every person employed in an industry governed by an award is going too far.
“When funds are gathered, by a majority vote of the union, portion may be allocated to the funds of a political party. To take money from a person who objects to joining in the first place, and compel him to contribute to a party whose policy he does not agree with, is hardly British justice.”
