{Per rress sissocAcitAon,- vox*sjnantA DUNEDIN. This Day. Labour lost two of its most prominent members on •the City Council in the defeat of the Mayor, the Rev. E, T. Cox, and Mr Mark Silverstone, chairman of the finance committee, and a Government director of the Reserve Bank, in a record poll for Dunedin, Mr F. Neilson. M.P.. also polled poorly. Only three Labour councillors out of 12 nominated were elected. They included Dr. D. G. McMillan. M.P.. and Mr J. W. Munro, M.P. Turned the Tables. At the election three years ago. Labour returned the Mayor. Mr Cox, who had previously held office for two years,'and six councillors, giving it a majority vote. On Wednesday, the ticket known as “the citizens’ “ completely turned 'the tables, returning a well-known business man, Mr A. H. Allen, as Mayor, and nine councillors to Labour’s three. For the Harbour Board (five seats) and the Hospital Board (seven seats), Labour had two candidates returned for each, including Mrs McMillan, wife of the M.P.. for the Hospital Board. Mr. Silverstone, who sought re-elec-tion to the lather, suffered another heavy defeat. Mr. Munro was also returned for the Harbour Board. Voting for the mayoralty was as follows: A. H. Allen (C) 17,899 Rev. E. T. Cox (L.) .. 13,736 Majority for Allen ... 4,163 The Press Association States that an unusual feature of the Dunedin elections is that a newcomer, Mr. R. Walls (Labour), secured a seat on all three bodies. The poll was the largest in the history of municipal elections. 31,866 polling of 44,287 eligible.
