[Special to ‘‘Northern Advocate”l ROTORUA, This Day. Mr Semple, Minister of Public Works; fn a reply to a deputation of three Ngongotaha Valley settlers, said: “I can tell you definitely that the Government is not going to build roads in back-country districts and also maintain them. “We are not mugs enough to do that,” added . the Minister. “We have already spent about £1,750,00C on the development of backcountry roads, and now we expect the farmers through their county councils to maintain them.” The deputation also asked the Minister that consideration be given to the need for electrical reticulation for the 13 homes and cowsheds in the district.

Mr Semple stated that there were 20,000 farmers in the Dominion without electricity, but it was the policy of the Government to give them the service as early as possible. “When that power is available a national policy will be announced,” said Mr Semple. “Money does not grow on mulberry bushes and the Government is not going to run the country into debt, but is going to live upon its internal income.”
