Orgy of Scoring; Australians 708 for Five Wickets

(Received noon.) LONDON, May 12. rpHE AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS RAN UP THE MAMMOTH TOTAL OF 1 708 FOR FIVE WICkETS, BEFORE DECLARING THE INNINGS CLOSED, AGAINST CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY THIS AFTERNOON. Bradman and Badcock added 50 in only 15 minutes. Then Bradman was caught at point. His innings had lasted 170 minutes, his total of 137 including 19 fours. Badcock, with powerful drives, helped to raise the side’s 300 in 185 •minutes. When play was resumed to-day, the weather was warm and dusty. Badcock and Hassett steadily played themselves in, and began an orgy of run-getting. The wicket was easy and the outfield fast. Neither batsman was reckless, and both seemed intent on getting the century. The partnership put on 100 runs in 80 minutes, and a total of 400 in 270 minutes. Badcock recorded the tenth century of the tour, and hit 16 fours. Losing two wickets for 73 in the second innings, ’Varsity still require 515 to avert an innings defeat.

Hassett’s Double Century,

Hassett (Victoria) not only reached three figures in his third successive innings, but on this occasion his century w'as a double one, and he carried his bat as well. Badcock followed his 198 at Leicester on Monday with another big innings—this time 14 runs off the 200 mark. With the bowling becoming futile, Badcock and Hassett added runs at a great rate. Badcock’s century took 120 minutes, while Hassett occupied 165 minutes.

Badcock continued to hit with devastating force, and eventually was caught at mid-on, after batting for 200 minutes. He hit one six and 29 fours.

The fourth wicket partnership was worth 275 runs, the second, between Fingletcn and Bradman having added 215. 600 Up. Hassett raised the side’s 600 after 385 minutes. The fieldsmen were tired and sore fingers caused them to slacken. Hassett was at the crease 260 minutes, and hit 35 boundaries. The University opening players were more attractive than in the initial innings. The first wicket put on 55 before Wild was bowled. Scores: CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY.
