Enemy Losses Are Heavy, Hankow Claims
[Per Pres* Association. Copyright. l WELLINGTON, This Day. The Chinese Consul, Mr Feng Wang, has received the following. Hankow cablegram: “There is severe fighting west of Shantung and south of the Hwai Hiv*f, and the enemy’s intention to cut the Lunghi railway is definitely revealed. “West of Shantung the enemy followed the Kingshiang and Ytai highway in their attacks, but during the last two days, we have killed over 1000 of the enemy. North of the Hwai River we strongly counterattacked Menchang and the vicinity, killing 500 Japanese and destroying two tanks.
“Our planes bombed and sank two Japanese' warships at the mouth of the Pearl River, and destroyed arms depots and ammunition dumps in various small islands in possession of the Japanese. . “The Chinese military spokesman stated that since the beginning of the Sino-Japanese conflict enemy planes have been destroyed by us to the total of 625.”
