Step To Safeguard British Newsprint Industry
(Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, May 12. Bowater and C 0.,, Ltd., have agreed to purchase the Cornerbrook paper mills in Newfoundland as a step to safeguard the British newsprint industry from a threatened shortage of pulp, which began in 1937 and resulted in a rise in prices, accentuated by the tactics of Scandinavian producers. ;■ j :; i 1
British newspapers came to the assistance of Bowaters and voluntarily agreed to an increase in prices. The incident showed- the vulnerability of the British newsprint industry, unless it controlled the sources of supply. hence the present deal.
