Two Stirring Matches in Whangarei Championship

Rugby

EXPECTATIONS OF A STIRRING DUEL BETWEEN HIKURANGI AND 1J CITY DREW A LARGE ATTENDANCE TO RUGBY PARK ON SATURDAY AND SPECTATORS WERE NO REASON FOR DISAPPOINTMENT. Tho football was really high class. and for the first half hour it appeared move than possible that City would be capable of accounting for vhc-ir formidable opponents. At that stage they were winning fore and aft, but, as the game progressed, Hikurangi, with brilliant and unorthodox moves, scored at a fast rate to win 16—8. Scintillating movements, by both teams deadly tackling' and speed stamped the game as the best of tho season to date. Having escaped any bad effects from the phenomenal rainfall earlier in tho week, Rugby Park was in excellent condition. The fact that tho ball was slightly greasy had no effect on the handling, which was remarkable. Maungakaramea and Kamo, whose play in their opening matches had been anything but impressive, created a surprise at Kamo when a very evenly contested match brought forth some excellent passages of bright, sparkling football. Both teams improved their reputation, sufficiently so as to silence criticism regarding their continuation as senior competitors. If the ’standard shown at Kamo is maintained both of these teams will provide excellent opposition for others in the grade. Maungakaramea won by six points to three, after a scoreless first half.
